The best playa menu is one you will eat when hot, tired, and wearing dusty gloves. Build around shelf-stable food and make refrigeration a measured safety system, not a guess.
Official guidance: Burning Man Project says participants must bring all food and supplies they need. Ice is sold in Black Rock City, but food and sundries are not.
Plan meals around heat and access
- Pack complete meals plus no-cook backups and transit food.
- Make the first and last day especially simple.
- Put a food thermometer in every cooler holding perishables.
- Keep raw meat and poultry isolated from ready-to-eat food.
- Wash or sanitize hands before food handling and protect clean utensils from dust.
- Include enough containers to hold food scraps, meltwater, and damaged packaging for pack-out.
Expert guidance: FoodSafety.gov says perishable food in a cooler should remain at 40°F (4°C) or below. It recommends enough ice or freezer packs, a thermometer, and separation of raw foods from cooked or ready-to-eat foods.
Cooler patterns and tradeoffs
- One cooler: fewer objects, but every drink opening warms the food.
- Food plus beverage coolers: better temperature control, but more volume and ice management.
- Mostly shelf-stable menu: less refrigeration risk and gray water, but less variety.
- Pre-cooked frozen meals: double as ice early in the week, but still need a safe thaw and reheating plan.
Playa tip (community practice - not an official requirement): Pack meals in day order and freeze what can safely be frozen. Open the food cooler only for a planned retrieval. Drain or retain meltwater according to your cooler design without spilling it on the playa.
Common mistakes
- A cooler feels cold but has no thermometer.
- Raw juices can reach fruit, drinks, or cooked food.
- Every meal needs a stove, clean counter, and several pans.
- Ice melt or dishwater has no contained destination.
- The menu assumes appetite, time, and dexterity remain normal.
- A late departure leaves no safe meal or water for the ride home.
When temperature history is unknown, do not use taste or smell to declare a perishable food safe. This guide is general food-safety information, not a substitute for medical care or the current instructions for a specific food.
Test before departure
Pack one cooler exactly as planned, place it in summer conditions, and record the thermometer at realistic opening intervals for a full day. Prepare one day of meals with the packed stove, utensils, water, and cleanup system.
