Your trip is not one drive or bus ride. It is a sequence: reach the departure point, prove entry eligibility, move gear through Gate, reach camp, and keep enough capacity to reverse the process after a demanding week.
Official rule - 2026: Everyone entering in a vehicle needs a valid event ticket. Vehicles driven into Black Rock City, except motorcycles, require a vehicle pass purchased in advance. Do not wait along Highways 447 or 34 or in Gerlach for Gate to open.
Settle the route before you pack
- Put current photo ID, ticket or order details, transport confirmation, and one paper backup together.
- Carry water, food, medication, goggles, mask, warm layers, and a light where they remain reachable during delays.
- Check live Gate and road information before leaving the last reliable service area.
- Give every handoff more time than its advertised minimum.
- Keep the exit load plan, tie-downs, driver rest plan, and return food intact all week.
If you drive
The official 2026 traffic guide lists Gate opening at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, August 30, with the event running from 6 p.m. August 30 through 6 p.m. September 7. It says Highway 447 traffic is typically heaviest from late morning through midnight on Sunday and Monday. Re-check those details before departure because weather and operations can change access.
Official guidance: Inspect the loaded vehicle, including tires and pressure, spare, cooling system, belts, brakes, hoses, lights, and fluids. Use BMIR 94.5 FM, GARS 95.1 FM, and the official BRC Dashboard for current traffic information when operating.
If you use Burner Express
Before booking (commercial claim - verify before purchase): The operator’s 2026 page says Burner Express serves Reno and San Francisco, uses a dedicated Gate lane, and offers scheduled return service. It currently lists two checked luggage items plus one small carry-on, with size and weight limits, and optional bike transport. Terms, stops, fees, and capacity can change.
Bus riders need an event ticket and ID. Confirm the check-in lead time for the departure city. If buying water through Burner Express, purchase it in advance, bring an accepted container, and confirm who is eligible to collect it. Do not assume a shopping-stop ticket or extra-luggage option exists on your route.
Playa tip (community practice - not an official requirement): Pack one arrival bag that can support you for several hours if checked luggage or a bike reaches the depot at a different time.
Common mistakes
- A flight or rental handoff has no delay margin.
- Tickets and confirmations are reachable only through one phone.
- Essential water or medication is checked or buried.
- The vehicle was inspected before, not after, its full load was added.
- Exodus timing assumes an exact drive time or a same-day flight.
- Dusty, wet, expanded gear no longer fits the return load.
Test before departure
Run a tabletop rehearsal from front door to camp and back. Name every document, handoff, bag limit, fuel or charging stop, driver, and decision point. Then load the vehicle or carry the complete bus allowance once.
