Showers and gray water without a playa spill

Reduce water at the source, contain every drop, and leave with more capacity than you expect to use.

Every shower creates a second logistics problem: used water. A shower is ready only when its floor, drain, storage, treatment, transport, and final disposal path are ready.

Official rule: Gray water must not be discharged onto the playa. That includes water used for bathing, washing, cooking, or dishes, even when the soap is marketed as biodegradable.

Start with gray-water capacity

  • Use the least water that meets the need.
  • Put the shower or wash station inside secondary containment.
  • Route every drop into a closed, stable, labeled container.
  • Size storage for showers, handwashing, dishes, cooler melt, leaks, and a reserve.
  • Keep clean water and gray-water tools physically distinct.
  • Choose a verified pump or legal off-site disposal path before departure.
  • Stop water-generating activities immediately if the system leaks or loses capacity.

Official guidance: The 2026 Survival Guide says public pools and showers are not permitted and recommends a portable shower only with a system to collect and manage gray water. Burning Man Project’s gray-water page does not recommend simple flat evaporation ponds.

Options and tradeoffs

  • Sponge bath or wipes: lowest water volume, but all used material still needs pack-out.
  • Low-flow bag or pump shower: comfortable and measurable, but needs a stable enclosure and complete drain capture.
  • Closed haul containers: simple to understand, but heavy and prone to slosh or expansion if overfilled.
  • Engineered evaporation device: may reduce haul volume, but needs tested capacity, containment, maintenance, and a backup. Do not treat a sheet of plastic on the playa as a plan.
  • Approved on-site pumping: reduces transport, but schedules can slip and capacity must last through a delay.

Playa tip (community practice - not an official requirement): Measure one real shower at home by catching the outflow. Use that result, not the shower bag's nominal size, to calculate storage.

Common mistakes

  • The drain hose can pop loose or sits higher than the collection point.
  • Dust blocks a filter and causes an overflow.
  • A container is too heavy to lift safely when full.
  • Gray water is stored in a vessel that could be confused with potable water.
  • Pumping is scheduled for the last usable day with no delay buffer.
  • The return vehicle cannot carry full containers upright and secured.

Test before departure

Assemble the complete shower and drain system over a dry surface. Run the maximum expected flow, deliberately block the filter, and inspect every joint. Fill transport containers with clean water to verify weight, seals, tie-downs, and return-space geometry.
