A tent keeps dust and weather off you. Shade keeps solar load off the tent and gives you somewhere to recover during the day. Treat them as two systems, even when they share part of a footprint.
Official guidance - 2026: Burning Man Project warns that the Black Rock Desert can move rapidly between extreme heat, cold, high wind, lightning, rain, and whiteout conditions. Every structure and loose item must be secured for wind.
Build shelter and shade as one system
- Choose a sleeping shelter you can close against dust.
- Add independent shade with enough covered area to sit or lie down outside the sleeping space.
- Bring anchors, rated line, tensioners, tools, gloves, and visible or padded protection for every protruding anchor.
- Give hot air a safe path out; do not rely on a fan as the only cooling plan.
- Keep warm and rain layers in a dry, reachable bag.
- Give bedding, medication, food, and electronics an elevated dry location.
Playa tip (community practice - not an official requirement): A reflective outer layer with an air gap usually reduces heat transfer better than a reflective sheet touching the sleeping shelter. Results depend on the materials and ventilation, so test the actual build.
Options and tradeoffs
- Small tent under shared shade: compact and inexpensive, but dependent on the shared structure staying usable.
- Standalone shade plus tent: more parts and anchors, but either layer can fail without removing all protection.
- Vehicle or RV: stronger shell and faster setup, but heat, exhaust, power, and ventilation still need deliberate planning.
- Active cooling: can improve rest, but adds water, power, maintenance, and a single point of failure. Shade and airflow must still work when power does not.
Common mistakes
- A decorative canopy has no engineered wind plan.
- Stakes, lag screws, or guy lines become trip hazards.
- Shade fabric turns into a sail because there is no release or lowering plan.
- Loose chairs, lids, paper, or packaging become airborne MOOP.
- The only rain footwear or warm layer is buried under the camp build.
- Cooling exhausts warm, damp, or combustion air into a sleeping area.
Test before departure
Pitch the complete system once using only the packed tools. Mark every part, count anchors in and out, and time setup. Have another person inspect every connection. Practice lowering or securing the shade quickly without standing under loaded fabric or lines.
If a whiteout begins, prioritize people over gear: seek shelter; if none is near, stop moving, turn away from the wind, cover your face, and wait for visibility.
